How the projection works

The calculator compounds your starting balance monthly at the annual return rate, adds monthly contributions, and applies the annual fee at the end of each year. The result is expressed in nominal terms and in today's money after accounting for inflation.

FV = P · (1 + r)^n + M · [ ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r ]

Where r is the net monthly return (annual return − annual fee, divided by 12) and n is the number of months.

Frequently asked questions

For a globally diversified equity portfolio, long-run nominal returns have historically averaged 7–10% before fees and 6–8% after fees. For a balanced portfolio (60% stocks, 40% bonds), 5–7%. Bonds alone: 3–5%. These are historical averages, not predictions — future returns may be lower. Whatever figure you use, also project a pessimistic scenario (2–3 percentage points lower) to see how your plan holds up.

A 1% annual fee can reduce your final balance by 20–25% over 30 years. On a £500,000 portfolio at 7% return, 30 years of 1% fees cost over £300,000 — a huge amount. This is why low-cost index funds and platforms are so widely recommended.
