Goal savings formula

FV_goal = PV · (1 + r)^n + PMT · [ ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r ]

Solve for the contribution PMT given the target FV_goal:

PMT = (FV_goal − PV · (1 + r)^n) · r / ((1 + r)^n − 1)

Where PV is the current savings, r is the rate per contribution period, and n is the total number of contributions.

Frequently asked questions

For a typical savings account, use the current AER (annual equivalent rate). For a cash ISA, use the ISA rate. For an investment-based goal (stocks and shares ISA), a conservative long-term assumption is 4–6% after fees, but these returns are not guaranteed. Never project a rate you couldn't survive falling short of.

Yes — add 5–10% as a buffer. Interest rates can change, unexpected expenses may force you to pause contributions, and inflation reduces what your target amount actually buys. Over-saving gives you a margin of safety.
