Cylinder formulas

Base area: A_base = πr²

Lateral surface area: A_lat = 2πrh

Total surface area: A_total = 2πr² + 2πrh = 2πr(r + h)

Volume: V = πr²h

Space diagonal: d = √((2r)² + h²)

Frequently asked questions

Lateral surface area is just the curved side of the cylinder (like the label on a can). Total surface area includes the lateral side plus the two circular ends. Total = lateral + 2 × base area.

From V = πr²h, rearrange to r = √(V / (πh)). You still need the height to determine the radius uniquely.
