Flooring quantity formula

Area to cover = room area × (1 + waste / 100)

Total cost = Area to cover × price per unit area

Typical waste allowances: 5% for straight-lay laminate or vinyl planks in a simple room; 10% for most rooms; 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — you always need at least 5%. Even in a simple rectangular room, cuts at the edges, defects and future repairs require spare material. For complex patterns or rooms with many corners, use 15%.

Divide the box price by the square footage the box covers. For example, if a box costs £45 and covers 20 ft², enter 45 ÷ 20 = 2.25 as the price per square foot.
