Midpoint Calculator
Find the midpoint between two points on the coordinate plane. The midpoint is the point exactly halfway between them — the average of their x-coordinates and the average of their y-coordinates.

The midpoint formula
M = ( (x₁ + x₂) / 2 , (y₁ + y₂) / 2 )
The midpoint is the average of the coordinates. It lies exactly halfway along the line segment connecting the two points.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
(x₁, y₁) | First point |
(x₂, y₂) | Second point |
M | Midpoint |
Worked examples
Example 1 — Simple midpoint
Midpoint of (2, 4) and (8, 10).
M = ((2+8)/2, (4+10)/2) = (5, 7).
Midpoint = (5, 7)
Example 2 — Negative coordinates
Midpoint of (−3, 5) and (7, −1).
M = ((−3+7)/2, (5+−1)/2) = (2, 2).
Midpoint = (2, 2)
Example 3 — Decimal midpoint
Midpoint of (1.5, 2.5) and (4.5, 6.5).
M = (3, 4.5).
Midpoint = (3, 4.5)

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The midpoint is equidistant from both endpoints, so the two halves of the segment have equal length. This is the defining property of a midpoint.
Yes. Rearranging the formula: x₂ = 2x_m − x₁ and y₂ = 2y_m − y₁. This page calculates the midpoint; to solve for an endpoint, apply those formulas manually.
No. The midpoint has fractional coordinates whenever the sum of the endpoints' x or y values is odd. For example, the midpoint of (0, 0) and (1, 1) is (0.5, 0.5).
