How the projection works

The calculator compounds your current savings monthly at the expected return rate and adds monthly contributions. The result is expressed in nominal terms (the actual number you'd see on a statement) and in today's money (inflation-adjusted) — the second figure is what actually matters for lifestyle comparisons.

Projected = P · (1 + r)^n + M · [ ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r ]

Where P is current savings, M is the monthly contribution, r is the monthly return (annual ÷ 12), and n is the number of months until retirement.

Frequently asked questions

A common benchmark is 10–12× your final salary by age 65 for a comfortable retirement. Another is to aim for 25× your desired annual spending, which supports the "4% rule" — withdrawing 4% of the portfolio per year with a high probability of it lasting 30+ years. Both are guides, not rules.

Use nominal returns (7–8% for a diversified equity portfolio) and enter inflation separately to see both figures. If you prefer, use a real return (4–5%) and set inflation to 0 — you'll get the same today's-money result without needing to interpret two numbers.
