Mulch formulas

Volume = area × depth

1 m³ ≈ 1.308 yd³ ≈ 35.3 ft³

Standard bag = 2 ft³ = 0.0566 m³

Recommended depths

  • Garden beds: 5–8 cm (2–3 inches)
  • Around trees and shrubs: 5–10 cm (2–4 inches), kept away from the trunk
  • Weed suppression / new beds: 8–10 cm (3–4 inches)

Frequently asked questions

5–8 cm (2–3 inches) is ideal for most garden beds. Deeper than 10 cm can suffocate plant roots and hold too much moisture. Around trees, keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per cubic metre for projects larger than about 2–3 m³. Bagged mulch is more convenient for small areas and easier to transport yourself.
