How savings grow

Balance = P · (1 + r/n)^(n·t) + M · [ ((1 + r/n)^(n·t) − 1) / (r/n) ]

Where P is the initial deposit, M is the monthly contribution, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is compounding periods per year, and t is the term in years.

Frequently asked questions

The more often interest is added, the sooner it starts earning interest itself. For a 4.5% account over 10 years, monthly compounding produces a slightly higher final balance than annual compounding — the difference grows with rate and time. Most UK savings accounts compound monthly or daily.

For short-term goals (2–5 years) inflation is usually minor. For long-term goals (10+ years) it matters a lot — £100,000 in 20 years won't buy what £100,000 buys today. Enter an inflation rate to see the "real value" in today's money.
